We spoke to Hannah, National Fundraising Events Coordinator about all things fundraising.
Hannah has worked for the Huntington’s Disease Association for over 13 years. She started part-time, in a junior role and has worked her way through various job titles but is now (recently titled) National Fundraising Events Co-ordinator. Hannah’s past experience has included Barnados and in the arts and heritage world. In her spare time, Hannah also works part-time as a swimming teacher which is something she also loves and cherishes.
How has your previous role helped you in the role you are in now?
"Working for Barnardo's was my first charity job, but all my job roles have been about making a difference to communities. I’ve always wanted to try, in my own way, to put a little good back into the world. Whether that’s been raising funds to support people and families, providing direct care for children and young people with life-limited conditions or teaching babies and young people how to swim and develop confidence and safety skills."
In the 13 years you have been with the charity, how has your role developed?
"When I first joined I was part-time, but very quickly, it became clear the role needed to be full-time. Over the past 13 years, I have moved from Event Support Fundraiser to Community Fundraiser and now I am the National Fundraising Events Coordinator (I even did social media along the way.) These days my role focuses on more ‘sporty’ events. So if you are taking part in a walk, run, swim, skydive or cycle you’ll come to me for support. Can’t wait to hear about your challenge!"
What changes have you noticed in our fundraising community as the charity has grown?
"There are more people than ever before doing incredible events and challenges to raise funds to support our work and raise awareness. Social media has grown massively in 13 years and it’s wonderful to share what people in the Huntington’s community are doing to raise funds to inspire others. The increase in children and young people getting involved and taking on their own fundraising challenges. They are inspirational. Everyone is."
What is your favourite thing about your role?
"Talking to people after their events, sharing the highs and sometimes lows when things haven’t gone to plan. Being blown away by what some of our community decide to do – no two days are the same and I’m always surprised. The London Marathon is always a really special weekend. London feels like a village and the atmosphere is lovely. I also enjoy following the trends in activity challenges events, seeing what’s going to be popular and the next ‘big thing’."
What's your favourite fundraising campaign that the charity has done?
"I was proud to have developed the concept for the Odds And Socks Day campaign. The idea came from trying to offer the community an inclusive fundraiser that anyone could get involved in and that highlighted the 50/50 risk in a way that was easy to convey in an impactful way. It was so much fun and really, the most accessible fundraiser we’ve ever delivered. I really hope it continues to remain popular."
Are there any fundraising ideas that have stuck with you?
"Pie in the Face Challenge!! It organically grew from the Huntington’s community and was around the time of the Ice Bucket Challenge. I remember coming in after the weekend it took hold and the donations had gone through the roof – it was amazing. Obviously I took part and remember having whipped cream in my hair and on my clothes for the rest of the day, hahahaha."
Is there any advice you would give to those thinking about doing a fundraiser?
"Whether it's training towards a massive distance or fundraising towards a massive target - break it down. You might feel overwhelmed but make a plan. Break distances or amounts into chucks. Get organised. And don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends and family. And don’t forget…I’m here for a phone call or Zoom call to talk through ideas and share materials with you."
Thank you to Hannah for giving us an inside into your role at the Huntington's Disease Association.
