If you are a healthcare professional with an interest in undertaking a PhD, this could be the ideal opportunity for you. The Wellcome Trust -funded Doctoral Training Partnership offers a Mental Health and Neurosciences PhD programme for healthcare professionals who are registered with a UK/ROI national body for healthcare, enabling you to undertake a funded PhD which covers your NHS salary.

This project is “competition funded”, which means that a number of projects are being offered, and the projects with the strongest applicants will receive funding.

About the project

The project title for the offered PhD is: End-of-life care in Huntington’s disease: How are we doing, and how can we do better?

The project aim is to understand what person-centred care means for people affected by Huntington’s in end-of-life, with an emphasis on understanding the needs and preferences of the person and their family carers. Interviews with people with Huntington’s, family carers and healthcare staff will be used to understand experiences, challenges and mental health needs at end-of-life.

From this work, we will support you in developing an intervention to improve care and approaches in this area, using appropriate co-production methods.

The supervisors for this project are:

  • Dr Chris Williams, a GP specialising in end-of-life care: cdw4@le.ac.uk
  • Dr Sarah Gunn, a clinical psychologist and researcher specialising in Huntington’s disease: sarah.gunn@le.ac.uk

If you are interested, please get in touch on the email addresses are above. We are very happy to be contacted with questions.

Together, we will provide the expertise around end-of-life care and working with people with Huntington’s that you will need for this project.
