Part of our goal to strengthen health and social care for those affected by Huntington’s is by providing training for care staff.
Since launching our ‘Overview of Huntington’s disease for care staff’ monthly webinar in July 2023, 1,241 care home staff have attended the live training event. 98% of attendees who filled out a survey post-event said that they now have a better understanding of Huntington’s disease after attending the session.
One attendee said:
This has been incredible to assist my knowledge and understanding of how people feel and the symptoms.
Each month the online training is presented by Huntington’s Disease Association, Education Lead, John Gregor. The overview includes the history and genetics of Huntington’s and a number of video case studies to get a real insight into living with the disease.
John looks at each symptom, the challenges this may lead to, and the many ways the symptoms can manifest and impact a person. He then talks about what can be done to support someone with Huntington’s and how better understanding a person's needs leads to improved symptom management and care.
Another attendee said:
Thank you so very much, I really feel our service will improve supporting people in the future.
How do these sessions benefit professionals?
An optional survey is given at the end of the training. Based on 406 responses to the survey, 97% of those said they agree or strongly agree to the statement - 'Because of the training I feel better equipped to deal with the challenges of supporting someone with Huntington's disease'.
Just wanted to say this has been a great training session thank you so much! Really summarised the main symptoms and what can be done practically to help, but also things to keep in mind when supporting patients and their families.
Going forward
We are continuing to develop our webinars and training to support healthcare professionals who care for Huntington’s patients. Other webinars consist of topics that have either been put forward by specialists or that have been requested by our community such as sleep and continence.
