Celebrating success: Volunteer Fundraiser Awards 2018
Seventeen nominees. Three awards. Two categories. One amazing night!
On Saturday 14 July, we celebrated the amazing achievements of our wonderful fundraisers at our Volunteer Fundraiser Awards ceremony at the Hard Days Night Hotel, Liverpool. The evening was the chance to say a huge thank you and celebrate the dedication and determination of each of the nominees who have supported the HDA in their own amazing ways.
There were two awards up for grabs in the Most Inspiring Volunteer category, and one award available in the category of Young Volunteer of the Year.
There were a fantastic 12 nominees for the Most Inspiring Volunteer award, and five nominees for Young Volunteer of the Year. The winners were chosen by public vote from the group of nominees.
And the winners are…
Most Inspiring Volunteer 2018 – Linda Cullin-Moir and Helen Martin
Linda Cullin-Moir with Cath Stanley and Charles Sabine
Linda Cullin-Moir from Bedfordshire, who has Huntington’s disease, ran the London Marathon to raise funds and awareness to help others affected by the disease, following the support she received from the HDA after her diagnosis.
Linda said:
“It has been amazing to have won this award, I would like to thank everyone at the HDA. I feel humble to have won this award, and the support from the team in Liverpool has made winning the award very special. The HDA team who supported me since being diagnosed with this disease in 2012 have been very kind. It means the world to have won this amazing award, so thanks again, it means everything.”
Helen Martin with Cath Stanley and Charles Sabine
Helen Martin, from the Isle of Man, dedicated a whole year to fundraising for the HDA. Her fantastic fundraising included organising raffles, bucket collections, karaoke and disco nights. She added to her fundraising total by going alcohol free for six months and courageously ‘braved the shave’ in return for donations.
Helen said:
“I’m honoured to win and I dedicate it to all the people who supported and donated. I’m overwhelmed as there are so many fabulous fundraisers doing a sterling job, not only raising vital money for the HDA but also much needed awareness. The event is such a lovely thing that the HDA does, it’s nice to get recognition but also wonderful to meet other like-minded fundraisers who in my opinion are all winners.”
Young Volunteer of the Year 2018 – Jessica Webb
Cath Stanley, Jessica Webb and Charles Sabine
Jessica Webb, from Hampshire, is 13 and a self-confessed chatter-box. She completed a sponsored silence to raise funds to help other families after seeing the vital support the HDA has given her family.
Jessica said:
“I am really pleased I won the award and it means so much to know that I raised funds and spread awareness of Huntington’s disease. I have tried so hard to get to this point and to win was a sensational feeling. Everyone who was there who worked hard and raised money for HD were amazing. I have made new friends on the night and together we have plans for a future fundraiser so watch this space!”
Kate Davis, Head of Fundraising, thanked all the winners, nominees and fundraisers up and down the country for their support: “Linda, Helen and Jessica are fantastic examples of our community's volunteers, who challenge themselves to help families affected by Huntington’s. Donations and sponsorship money collected by our wonderful volunteer fundraisers make up a third of the HDA’s income. Last year this equated to over £440,000, which has a huge impact on the charity and gives us the flexibility to meet the needs of the Huntington’s community.
“The Fundraising team are keen to support our fundraisers in any way possible, as we know good fundraising is about inspiring and engaging the community so they can achieve their fundraising goals. Working together helps everyone to share ideas and helpful tips for fundraising success.”
