The Huntington's Disease Association Newcastle branch is a self help group that was set up in 1993 by Christine Baines nee Green along with her family and a group of committee members. After losing her mum to HD Christine reached out to the wider community and an initial meeting resulted in more than 100 attendees. As it was originally known the Newcastle / Darlington/ Carlisle/ Sunderland branch was born. Christine has chaired for a total of 14 years and is still a very active member of the group.
To this day the Newcastle Branch still strives to help support as many local families as possible. We cover a wide area including, Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Northumberland.
The branch is completely run by volunteers and we rely on public funding to deliver our support service and all other monies are raised within the branch through various fundraising activities.
As a group we offer emotional and practical support to anyone affected by Huntington's Disease and Juvenile Huntington's Disease and their families. We strive to raise awareness of the disease and help to organise information days, children's activities and social events.
