Welcome to our two new staff Karen Jones (Senior Administration Officer) and Mark Jones (Administration Officer). Thank you for your patience during the move.
Announcement: March 2008
Over the last few months the Executive Council have been looking at the role of Head Office and the needs within the Association and those people we support.
At the AGM and in the latest HDA Newsletter, the EC circulated a questionnaire seeking your views on what the Association does well, where you think we could do better, and things you would like to see changed about the Association.
A subgroup was formed from members of the EC to look at a variety of issues regarding our Head Office, and also to consider the feedback from our members. The subgroup have considered the future needs of the HDA, particularly in terms of office space, accessibility and the roles of the staff working within Head Office. The aim is to ensure that Head Office is able to meet the growing demands of the Association as it expands. As a part of this exercise cost and location have been taken into consideration.
Following an EC meeting on Wednesday 5th March the difficult decision to relocate Head Office to a larger, purpose built venue which is more cost effective than our current location was decided. The EC have decided that our Head Office function will relocate to the Neurosupport Centre in Liverpool and it is anticipated that this move will take place in June 2008.
Arthur Sowerby, Chair of the County Durham Branch and Executive Council Member is leading the subgroup who will be taking this work forward. The decision to relocate Head Office has been made by the EC after carrying out extensive research into:
- the kudos of having an office in London
- the necessity of having an office in London
- the number of branch or other members who actually visit the office
- the monetary savings that could be made if the office were located outside of London.
The EC have looked at alternative locations for our Head Office, including Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. The most suitable location identified was the Neurosupport Centre in Liverpool, which would provide the HDA with a cost saving of approximately £30,000 per year compared to what we are currently paying at our London office base.
We hope that you will agree that this is a significant financial saving and is almost the equivalent to providing another Regional Care Adviser on the ground.
Obviously, a decision such as this cannot be made without considering the sensitive issues involved. One of the most sensitive issues for the EC to have considered is that Eileen Cook has worked for the Association for many years and has been an integral part of the communication between our branches, support groups and members. Eileen has been offered the option to relocate with the move but has, understandably, decided not to. It is with great sadness that we announce that Eileen will be leaving us when the London office closes in June 2008. I know that many of you will be concerned to hear this news and we can only reassure you that Eileen will be appropriately looked after by the Association and her hard work will not go without recognition.
We appreciate that this information will come as a shock to those of you who were unable to make it to this year's Branch Day. We would have liked the opportunity to discuss this with you in person but felt that it was important to share this news with you in writing as soon as possible. We will be making an announcement in our next newsletter so that all of our members are kept informed about the office move.
We know that you will all want to join us in thanking Eileen for her years of service, support and commitment to the Association.
Should you want to discuss this any further or have any queries or questions then please do not hesitate to contact either myself, Cath Stanley or Bill Crowder.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you in anticipation of your continued support over the coming months.
Yours sincerely,
Carole Carruthers
Chair of the Huntington's Disease Association
