HDA fundraising: The Global Challenge 3 Peaks Challenge
2010 Dates: 24th-25th July
Global Challenge UK specialises in the provision of Challenge Events designed to raise money for charities. These can take many forms but this event focuses on the tried and tested formula of teams walking three mountains within the UK in 24 hours.
On 24th-25th July 2010, Global Challenge UK is running an Open 3 Peaks Challenge. Teams will start in Scotland where they will climb Ben Nevis. From here they move onto Scafell Pike in the Lake District. Finishing up scaling the fantastic Mount Snowdon in North Wales. Teams will consist of 5 walkers plus a support crew of two non-walkers who will be responsible for the driving.
What is the event?
Three highest summits in Scotland, England & Wales - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within 24 hours. Having travelled to the Fort William area, (applicants will need to organise their own accommodation the previous night - lists of suitable accommodation can be provided), participating teams will start to climb Ben Nevis late on the Saturday afternoon. Teams start at 5-minute intervals, following their registration & equipment check along with their safety and communications briefs.

Standing at 4408ft, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles, and as such is the major challenge for any UK climber or walker.
The last teams should finish their descent of Ben Nevis approximately 23:00 that night. Once they have had a chance to get something to eat and drink, prepared by their support crew, they start their journey to Cumbria. All teams are given a minimum journey time between mountains, in order to eliminate the tendency to race to the next location. Even if they arrive early they will not be able to set off until their prescribed start time.
The second peak for the teams to climb is the spectacular Scafell Pike. Standing at 3,208 ft, it is climbed by thousands of people each year, and although can often be the 'low point' of the 3 Peaks Challenge, it can often afford spectacular views as the sun rises.
Stopping only briefly to rehydrate and take on some breakfast snacks, the teams head towards the Snowdonia National Park where they will be confronted by Snowdon standing at 3560ft. Ascending and descending the Llanberis path, teams will feel very pious as the tourist train passes them. The summit is wonderful with superb views, and perhaps a well-earned cup of hot tea would be the finishing touch to 'topping out'! However, remember that the clock only stops upon your return to Llanberis if you're aiming to get under the 24 hours!
An after event presentation ceremony & meal will be organised by Global Challenge UK, and for those left with an ounce of energy this can be followed by a disco & celebration. Once again, teams will have organised their own accommodation in the area, and after a good nights sleep on Sunday, teams will depart their own way on Monday morning in the knowledge that having climbed over 11,000ft in 24 hours, their fundraising has been well earned!
How does it work?
Each team comprises 5 walkers plus 2 non-walking drivers/support.
Any team can secure one or more places by paying the deposit of £500 + VAT which acts as the team's reserved entry (full team balance due 28 days before the event).
GCUK will design and manage the event, provide the highest quality safety cover, radio communications, provide information materials, briefings and a social activity immediately after the event.
Each team must train, have adequate equipment (a compulsory equipment list is provided) and manage its own accommodation and transport needs. The event complies with the Institute of Fundraising Code and this limits numbers and reduces environmental impact. The total cost per team to include the after event reception, meal & team certificate is £1,500 + VAT.
What do the walking teams need to do?
Logistics: Teams will consist of 5 walkers, plus 2 non-walking dedicated drivers who will act as the support crew. All transport costs and accommodation costs will be covered by the team. The correct clothing/equipment must be used - mountain weather conditions may change rapidly.
Preparation: The aim is for all teams to complete the challenge safely, not only on the mountains but equally, if not more importantly, on the roads. It is not a race!
All team leaders will receive a team handbook from GCUK, which will include advice on safety, diets, training, navigation, equipment, fundraising etc. In order to reach the level of fitness required, teams should follow the training advice.
Prior to the event, a briefing session will be held for all team leaders. GCUK has full third party liability insurance. Each individual should ensure that their own personal insurance arrangements cover them for participation in this type of event.
